What is a hybrid cloud, and how does it work?

Cloud computing is evolving at a rapid pace and is here to stay. However, organisations moving to cloud infrastructure are a matter of when and not why or how. A hybrid cloud is a highly effective cloud computing solution that combines the on-premise private cloud with one or more third-party cloud services connected with software that enables the communication between the clouds. This generally involves connection from an on-premise cloud or a company’s private data center to a public cloud. 

How do Hybrid clouds work?

A hybrid cloud computing model allows the organisations to redistribute workloads and functions in private IT environments or public clouds and move between the clouds depending upon computing needs and fluctuating costs. Multi clouds are similar to Hybrid clouds the, only difference being that the multi-clouds involve deploying workloads on two different public clouds and do not require a private cloud.

Hybrid Cloud architecture

This is established through three main components.

Public infrastructure as a service (IaaS) includes providers like Amazon web services, Microsoft Azure and Google cloud platform.

Networking and integration

A wide Area Network (WAN) is typically used for networking as it provides additional security. The connection specifications should adhere to the service level agreement specified by the public cloud provider. Since the organisation does not control the public cloud infrastructure, it should design or develop resources and cloud environments it chooses and compatible with the public cloud platform’s resources, services and application program interface. This requires the organisation to install or place the necessary hardware such as load balancers and LAN within its data centres. All in all, to be effective, the public cloud and the private cloud should be compatible with each other.

Hybrid cloud platforms

The APIs improve the interconnectedness between the clouds enabling smooth communication of resources and data. Additionally, organisations may build a virtualisation layer or hypervisor layer on top of on-premises resources to generate virtual machines connected to the public cloud through another software layer responsible for various cloud capabilities such as computing and orchestrating automation resilience and billing.

Benefits of Hybrid clouds

  • Flexibility: Organisations work with various data and resources in contrasting environments, thus enabling them to adjust their infrastructure as per their needs. The organisations can pick from among multiple options to suit the organisations need. 
  • Cost management: The hybrid clouds enable effective cost management, be it building its data centre infrastructure, which is expensive or uses the resources provided by the public cloud and pay only variable or operational expenses and not making expenses.
  • Scalability: A public cloud offers an organisation more resource and storage options. For instance, if a demand spike and the on-premise data centres are loaded, the organisations can deploy their workload and scale resources on the public cloud to meet the exceeding demands.
  • Resilience and interoperability: The organisation may opt to run workloads repeatedly on both the private and public clouds. Interoperability allows the components or resources of a single workload to be run in both environments.

AWS: Amazon web services is the largest public cloud globally, controlling over 40% of the cloud market.
